'Penthouse 3' Writer Kim Soon-ok "Season 3 theme is 'Destruction'"

by ♡♧☆♤ 2021. 6. 16.

'Penthouse 3' writer Soonok Kim has released 11 questions and 11 answers that contain everything about 'Penthouse', from the impressions of seasons 1 and 2 to the keywords of season 3.

The SBS Friday drama 'Penthouse 3', which was first aired on the 4th (Fri), recorded the highest viewership rating of 21.9% at the moment, recording an intense development of the prelude to 'The Last War' with the tragic ending of season 2 It changed the season's own highest score of 'View Ratings'. In this regard, we shared a Q&A with writer Soonok Kim, who provides both thrill and surprise at the same time with his addictive writing skills, and questions about 'Penthouse'.

Q1. In ‘Penthouse 2’, the highest viewership rating at the moment broke 31.5%. Season 1 has already left another history, surpassing 30% of all terrestrial mini-series dramas in 5 years. How do you feel about this?

Dreamlike things are happening. At the beginning, I was cursed so much that I prayed that I would only be able to finish the drama to the end, but I was stunned. When the final episode of 'My Sister is Alive' came out 24%, I had that conversation with the director. In the future, it will be impossible for my drama to exceed this rating. But then another miraculous thing happened. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to finish the story I was going to tell you to the end. I will do my best to achieve the beauty of Yujong.

Q2. In 'Penthouse 2', 'cause and retribution' was emphasized. Literally, the characters who were engulfed in lust and committed evil deeds were paid for their karma just as they did. What is the message you wanted to convey through 'Penthouse' Seasons 1 and 2?

Season 1 was centered on the story of 'human's endless desire', and season 2 was about 'causal retribution for sin'. “No human desire is satisfied. Like the plot of “Humans are endlessly trying to ascend to higher places,” whether a person has one square or a person with ninetynine squares, it seems that people are unhappy because of their lack and continue to sin because of their unhappiness. A person who still has ten houses is unhappy because he cannot buy one with ten houses, and even a person who is loved by a hundred people seems unhappy because of one person who does not love him.

Q3. What would be the most impressive scene in 'Penthouse' season 1 and 2, respectively?

In Season 1, thanks to the director's wellformed script, there were many better scenes than the script, so I'm very grateful. Especially in episode 20, the scene where the people of the Hera Club escaped from the van and swim across the poop was the most impressive. Marie (Shin Eun-kyung)'s narration mentions the fantastic party of Hera Palace, but on the real screen, the people who jump into shit to live and say they want to go first are well expressed in contrast, and I think the viewers must have been delighted with the first punishment. do. If those people had sincerely prayed for forgiveness then, the tragedy of season 2 would not have happened. In Season 2, the second punishment for the unchanging people unfolds, where Shim Soo-ryun (Lee Ji-ah) disguises herself as Na Aegyo and gets hit by Joo Dan-tae (Um Ki-joon) car, and in fact, she is locked up in the basement of a villa and tells the police, " What day is today?” I remember the most enjoyable part of writing the question. During a difficult time because I couldn't think of it so much, the scene came to mind and the story unfolded smoothly.

Q4. When the issue of school violence and real estate speculation, which occupied a large part in 'Penthouse' seasons 1 and 2, was intertwined with the broadcast, it also emerged as a social issue. What made school violence and real estate speculation an important issue?

I also took the entrance exams for my two children in a bloody educational field, so I came in close contact with education and real estate issues. I have also seen house prices rigging around the community of newly built apartments, and as the price of the apartment next door doubled within a few years, I was depressed by the sense of loss. I should have calmed down that it wasn't my job, but it didn't work out well. It was a coincidence that school violence and real estate speculation became a social issue. I was surprised too. In Season 1, there was even a national petition asking for the drama to be stopped because it was uncomfortable to see the school violence issue (that time was the most difficult time while writing it), but in Season 2, it was rather heartbreaking and gave me a lot of strength. I also gained courage. It's a bit inconvenient, but I think it's fortunate that we can touch on some of the harms of domestic violence, unfair education, and real estate issues.

I think we all met “Min Seolah” at least once in our lives. I would have hurt, harassed, verbally abused, and caused real damage because the environment was worse than mine. So do I. No one seems to be free on this matter. Like Jenny (Jin Ji-hee) in the play, I think that sometimes I can be a perpetrator and sometimes a victim.

Q5. Since the start of 'Penthouse', a lot of new words such as 'Maramat Story', 'Developing the speed of the underworld', 'Invincible myth', and 'Permissible for pure prison' were born. What do you think about this?

'Permissible in pure prison' is probably a term coined because of the lack of probability. admit it As the drama has many incidents and abruptly gets involved in a new case, the emotions of the characters are not properly understood, and the viewers must have been very confused as the dead people came back to life one by one like zombies. I heard that it was an 'Easter Special' (hahaha). Once, a game company came up with an advertisement offer. Maybe it's because the setting of 'Never die, always come alive' is a perfect fit for the game character. While watching the drama, I also reflect, feel ashamed, and have to fix it! Never save it! Even though I was making up my mind, I was preparing for a new incident or surviving without realizing it. These are new words created by viewers to protect and defend the lack of drama, so I am so grateful and ashamed of all of them.

Q6. What was the biggest difficulty or part of writing ‘Penthouse’ that you paid attention to?

I heard that a lot of young friends watch ‘Penthouse’. The story unfolds quickly like a game, so I was very worried when there were provocative or terrible scenes. As I dealt with extreme human emotions and events, brutal scenes were bound to come out, and I was very concerned because I thought it might have been uncomfortable to watch, even though it was said to be minimally suppressed.

Q7. The great feature of 'Penthouse' is that all the characters play an active role in the right place, as well as have a clear narrative. The roles of actors who digest Kim Soon-ok's writings in their own colors also seem to make up a big part.

Our actors really were like gifts. He created probabilities through acting, and even if he was a villain, he was faithful to the script and did his best to empathize with the emotions. I trusted the script and followed it. Perhaps that trust didn't come out of the drinking party (hahaha). It seems that there was a camaraderie of “trust each other and let’s go!” through the casting at the beginning and a natural drinking party. (The saddest thing is that we haven't seen each other because of the corona virus after that. I couldn't even finish the season 1 and 2 party. I'm looking forward to being able to get together and shoot together after the corona is over.)

In particular, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Eugene, who plays the role of Oh Yoon-hee. As the murderer who killed Min Seol-ah in Season 1, I got a lot of swearing and the body must have been mentally disturbed, but I never complained about it and concentrated on the script, thinking about how to be the most Oh Yoon-hee. She is only grateful to her for portraying the most realistic character in which good and evil coexist with her good and pretty face.

Q7-1. In particular, the 'rediscovery of actors' such as Jong-hoon Yoon, Eun-seok Park, Do-kwon Ha, Rosa Kim, Dong-gyu Kim, Do-hyeon Kim, Young-dae Kim, Ji-hyeon Han, Ye-bin Choi, and Tae-bin Lee stands out.

The good performances of the actors in this drama are all made by them. I think that the actors live by eating the field. At the scene, it is absolutely necessary to breathe in the script and create a character by yourself. I expected Park Eun-seok like the most Logan-li, Ha Do-kwon like the most Madui, Rosa Kim like the most butler, and Kim Young-dae like the most Joohoon. Fortunately, I feel proud that young actors have developed their characters well by breathing directly with their seniors, sometimes learning and sometimes competing. I think he will become the best actor in the future. In particular, I was very proud to see the three secretaries open the door of this season 3 special 'Hidden Room' and radiate their talents to their heart's content. It was the happiest moment. (Ah. Rosa Kim~ I don't hate that actress. I really love you~ I couldn't be with you until the end, but I respect you and became a big fan. I always support you!)

Q8. As much as the popularity of 'Penthouse', there are many speculations among viewers. Among them, 'Ju Dantae' is named after Dante and Jupiter (Zeus) in 'Dante's New Song' as a motif, and 'Barona' is named after a motif from 'Verona' in Italy, the background of 'Romeo and Juliet'. There are many opinions about the name.

The name of the character was created during a meeting with the assistant writers. 'Barona' is named after an Italian city where opera festivals are emerging, and the name 'Judantae' is not specifically designed with Zeus in mind, but it was named after the most powerful nuance. The first name I came up with was ‘Oh Yoon-hee’, but I wanted to give it a common name that anyone around would probably know. Actually, it's really hard to come up with a name in the play. I don't have talent on that side, but I'm lucky this time that the names fit the character well.

Q9. If you could define the theme of ‘Penthouse 3’ in one word, what would it be?

Season 3's theme is 'Destruction'. When humans sin, the whole world collapses. But even in that terrible situation, new heavens and earth will open up, and new sprouts will be born from the cracks in the crumbling stones.

Q10. What kind of drama do you want the drama 'Penthouse' to leave behind for viewers?

Reminds me of a comment left by a viewer. “I want to keep seeing how Seojin Cheon will live the rest of his life,” he said. As a writer, I was very grateful. If you are curious about how all the characters will live after the drama is over, I think it will be the most rewarding and happiest thing. When I was young, even after the drama was over, I couldn't get out of it, I remembered the characters in the play and hoped that I would be happy, and even in my dreams, I remember interacting. (I still see ‘Jae-ho’ in writer Noh Hee-kyung’s ‘Did We Really Love’ in my dreams) Another one! I want you to think that the house we live in is the happiest. I can't even live a day in the penthouse because of a real headache.

Q11. Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to the viewers?

Thank you for waiting for a long time of two months. The actors, writers, director, and staff will all do their best until the end. Please wait to see how the characters will end up in the end. Everything you reasoned may or may not be right, but I hope that the conclusion will save you even for a moment.
